The Goatherd and the Wild Goats
염소지기와 야생 염소
A GOATHERD, driving his flock from their pasture at eventide,
found some Wild Goats mingled among them,
and shut them up together with his own for the night.
The next day it snowed very hard,
so that he could not take the herd to their usual feeding places,
but was obliged to keep them in the fold.
He gave his own goats just sufficient food to keep them alive,
but fed the strangers more abundantly
in the hope of enticing them to stay with him
and of making them his own.
When the thaw set in, he led them all out to feed,
and the Wild Goats scampered away
as fast as they could to the mountains.
The Goatherd scolded them for their ingratitude in leaving him,
when during the storm he had taken more care of them
than of his own herd.
one of them, turning about, said to him:
"That is the very reason why we are so cautious;
for if you yesterday treated us
better than the Goats you have had so long,
it is plain also that if others came after us,
you would in the same manner prefer them to ourselves."
Old friends cannot with impunity be sacrificed for new ones.
어떤 염소지기가 저녁 무렵에 염소 떼들을 풀밭에서 몰고 가다가,
그들 중에 몇 마리의 들 염소가 섞여 있는 것을 발견하였다,
그리고 그들을 자신의 것과 함께 밤새도록 가두어 놓았다.
다음날 눈이 많이 내려서 그는 무리들을
그들이 날마다 먹는 장소에 데려갈 수 없었으므로,
그들을 우리 안에 가두어 둘 수 밖에 없었다.
그는 자신의 염소들에게는 살기에 충분한 만큼의 먹을 것을 주었지만,
들 염소들에겐 더 풍부하게 주어서 그들을
자신에게 묶어 두어 머물도록 하고
자기 자신 것으로 만들려고 생각하였다.
눈이 녹기 시작하자 그는 모두를 먹이려고 풀어 놓았다,
그러자 들 염소들은 가능한 재빨리 산으로 달려가 버렸다.
염소지기는, 자신이 눈보라가 칠 때 자기 자신의 무리보다
더 그들을 보살폈음에도,
그들이 자신을 떠난 배은망덕함을 꾸짖었다.
그들 중의 하나가 뒤를 돌아보며 말했다:
"우리가 이토록 조심스러워 하는 이유가 바로 그것이오;
왜냐하면 만일 당신이 어저께 오랫동안 데리고 있던 염소들 보다
우리를 더 좋게 대우했다면,
만일 다른 염소들이 우리 뒤에 온다면,
당신은 똑같이 우리 보다는 그들을
더 좋아할 것이 또한 명백하기 때문이오."
새로운 친구를 위해서 옛날 친구를 희생하여서는 안된다
