The Lion and the Mouse
사자와 생쥐
A LION was awakened from sleep
by a Mouse running over his face.
Rising up angrily, he caught him and was about to kill him,
when the Mouse piteously entreated,
saying: "If you would only spare my life,
I would be sure to repay your kindness."
The Lion laughed and let him go.
It happened shortly after this
that the Lion was caught by some hunters,
who bound him by strong ropes to the ground.
The Mouse, recognizing his roar,
came gnawed the rope with his teeth,
and set him free, exclaim
"You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you,
expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor;
I now let you know that it is possible for
even a Mouse to confer benefits on a Lion."
어떤 사자가 자신의 얼굴 위를 달려가던 생쥐 때문에 잠에서 깨어났다.
사자는 성난 표정으로 생쥐를 잡고서, 막 그를 죽이려 하자,
생쥐는 애처롭게 간청했다:
"만일 당신이 저의 목숨만 살려 주신다면, 당신의 은혜를 꼭 갚을게요."
사자는 웃으면서 그를 놓아 주었다.
이런 일이 있은 후에 얼마 안돼서, 사자는 사냥꾼들에게 잡혔으며,
튼튼한 밧줄로 묶인 채 땅에 엎드려 있었다.
생쥐는 사자의 울부짖는 소리를 알아차리고 찾아 와서는
이빨로 밧줄을 갉아내어서, 그를 자유롭게 해주었다.
"당신은 내가 당신을 정말 도울 수 있을까에 대해,
아니 당신의 호의를 내가 갚을 수 있다는 것을 비웃었지요;
그러나 이제 심지어 생쥐라도 사자에게
이익을 줄 수 있다는 것을 아시기 바랍니다."
