The one-Eyed Doe
외눈박이 암 사슴
A DOE blind in one eye was accustomed to graze
as near to the edge of the cliff
as she possibly could, in the hope of securing her greater safety.
She turned her sound eye towards the land
that she might get the earliest tidings of the approach of hunter or hound,
and her injured eye towards the sea,
from whence she entertained no anticipation of danger.
Some boatmen sailing by saw her, and taking a successful aim,
mortally wounded her.
Yielding up her last breath, she gasped forth this lament:
"O wretched creature that I am! to take such precaution against the land,
and after all to find this seashore, to which I had come for safety,
so much more perilous."
한 쪽 눈이 먼 암 사슴이 더욱 확신한 안전을 확보하기 위해서
절벽 위의 한 모퉁이 근처에서 풀을 뜯곤 하였다.
암 사슴은 사냥꾼이나 사냥개가 접근하는 것을 가장 빨리 알 수 있도록
건강한 눈을 육지를 향해 고정하였고,
한편 아무런 위험도 예상되지 않는 바다를 향해서는
그의 상처 입은 눈을 향하게 하였다.
어느 날 항해하던 뱃사공이 눈먼 사슴을 보고,
잘 겨냥한 다음 그에게 치명적인 상처를 주었다.
마지막 숨을 쉬면서, 암사슴은 이렇게 한탄하였다:
"나는 얼마나 불쌍한 놈인가!
육지는 그토록 경계를 하였지만,
내가 안전을 위해 찾아 온 이 바닷가가
이처럼 훨씬 더 위험하다니...."
