시인, 작사 작곡가, 가수 등 학자와 음악인으로 활동을 했지요.
불어에 능통하여 샹송 가사를 영어로 번역하기도 했고
팝은 물론 클래식 분야의
심포니나 오케스트라 음악까지 영역을 넓혔지요.
또한 사회 개혁에도 관심을 가져
1970년 남아프리카 투어 때는 흑백 좌석을 요구하기도 하여
후일 Sammy Davis, Jr., Ella Fitzgerald 같은
흑인 아티스트들의 공연을
열어주는 계기를 만들어 주었지요.
에이즈 퇴치, 어린이와 노인을 위한 기금을 마련하는 등
인도주의에 대한 노력으로
Freedoms Foundation Award을
두 번이나 수상하였지요.
