Jupiter and the Monkey
제우스와 원숭이
JUPITER ISSUED a proclamation to all the beasts of the forest
and promised a royal reward to the one
whose offspring should be deemed the handsomest.
The Monkey came with the rest and presented,
with all a mother's tenderness, a flat-nosed, hairless,
ill-featured young Monkey
as a candidate for the promised reward.
A general laugh saluted her on the presentation of her son.
She resolutely said,
"I know not whether Jupiter will allot the prize to my son,
but this I do know, that
he is at least in the eyes of me his mother,
the dearest, handsomest, and most beautiful of all."
제우스가 숲 속의 모든 짐승들에게 포고문을 발표하여서
가장 아름답다고 여겨지는 자식을 가진 자에게 왕실의 상금을 약속했다.
원숭이가 다른 짐승들과 함께 나타나서는
진정 어머니의 부드러움과 함께, 납작한 코, 대머리의,
형편없이 생긴 어린 원숭이를 약속한 상금의 후보자로 내세웠다.
원숭이가 그녀의 아들을 내어 놓자 모두가 박장대소 하였다.
그녀는 결연히 말했다,
"제우스가 나의 아들에게 상을 내릴지는 나도 모른다,
그러나 적어도 이것은 안다,
그는 어머니인 나의 눈에는,
어느누구보다도 가장 귀엽고, 멋있으며,
그리고 가장 아름답다는 것이다."
