The Night Chicago Died. 직역하자면
'시카고가 죽었던 밤' 정도의 뜻이 되겠죠.
1974년 영국 4인조 밴드 Paper Lace가 불러
미국 빌보드 차트 1위, 영국 차트 3위에 올랐던 곡입니다
이 노래에서 화자인 나는
20년대와 30년대 사이 미국 시카고를 중심으로
악명을 떨친 이탈리아 출신의 갱단 두목
알 카포네(Al Capone)가 이끄는 갱단과
시카고 경찰 간에 벌어진 가상의 총격전을
어린 아이 시각에서 보고 있는데요.
시내 곳곳에서 치열한 총격전이 벌어지는 가운데
엄마는 시카고 경찰인 남편이 목숨을 잃지 않을까 전전긍긍...
1929년 2월 시카고에서
알카포네가 이끄는 갱단이 라이벌 갱단을 상대로
'성 발렌타인 데이 학살'이라 불리는
무자비한 살육전을 벌인 적은 있지만...
이 노래에서처럼 실제 알카포네의 갱단과
경찰 사이에 대규모 총격전이
벌어졌던 적은 없다고 합니다.
가상의 총격전이란 말은 그래서 나온 것..........
