'프로그레시브 락' 이라는 장르의 역사속에서 절대로 빼놓을 수 없는 밴드
핑크 플로이드 (Pink Floyd) 이다.
원래는 기타를 맡고 있는 데이비드 길모어 (David Gilmour),
베이스의 로저 워터스 (Roger Waters), 드럼의 닉 메이슨 (Nick Mason)
그리고 키보드에 리처드 라이트 (Richard Wright) 로 이루어진
4인조 프로그레시브 락 밴드 였지만
2008년 리처드 라이트가 암으로 사망함으로서
현재는 3명의 구성원만 남아있는 상태이다.
이 곡은 1973년에 발매한 앨범 "The Dark Side of the Moon"에 실린곡으로
가사만 봐도 알 수 있듯이 전체적인 주제의식은
시간에 대해서 이야기를 하고 있지만 하나 하나 살펴보면
'시간 흘러가는게 아깝지도 않냐, 늦었을때라고 생각하면 진짜 늦은거다.'
라는 걸 이야기 한다는 것을 알 수가 있다.
실제로 로저 워터스가 곡의 가사를 작사를 하게 된 것도
인생에서 준비해야 할 것이 많지 않음을 깨닫게 되지만
그것을 깨달았을 때에는 이미 많은 시간이 지난것 같다는 생각에서
영감을 얻어서 작사를 했다고 한다.
그러니까 이곡은 우리가 평소에는 감사하게 생각하지 않고
무심코 흘려보내는 모든 것들에 대한
전반적인 반성과 충고가 담긴 노래이다
곡 앞부분의 시계 초침소리가 들리면서
후에 여러 시계들이 동시에 알람이 울리는 아이디어는
당시 앨범 녹음을 진행했을때 오디오 엔지니어
알란 파슨스 (Alan Parsons) 의 아이디어라고 한다.
그리고 뒤의 드럼솔로 이전에 다시 들리는 시계 초침 소리는
실제로 시계 초침소리가 아니고 로저 워터스가 베이스 줄을
뮤트 (베이스/기타 연주 주법중 하나) 해서 낸 소리이며
곡 중간에 나오는 코러스에 에코적인 사운드도
실제로 길모어가 Lexicon 이라는 오디오 기계로 연출 하는 등
다채롭고 실험적인 사운드 효과 들을 사용한 것은
가히 프로그레시브 락의 정신에 부합한
핑크 플로이드 다운 발상이라고 하겠다
이제 '핑크 플로이드' 라는 이름은
역사의 한 켠으로 묻혀가는데
유명한 밴드 치고 씁쓸한 은퇴식 같게도 느껴지지만
이런 실험정신과 진보적인(프로그래시브) 음악들은
역사 속에서 우리 곁에 영원히 남아 있을 것이다.
