원래의 이 가락은 아일랜드 민요입니다
이 민요를 아일랜드의 시인이자 소설가인
토마스 무어(Thomas Moor. 1779~1852)가
1808년에 시로 옮긴 것이지요
천연두에 걸린 무어의 아내가 흉해진 얼굴로
남편의 사랑을 잃을까 두려워
남편을 만나려 하지 않자,
아일랜드 민요에 이 가사를 붙여
아내의 침실 창가에서 불러
마침내 아내를 안심시키고
아내의 마음을 돌리게 했다고 합니다
이 노래는 1950 년대의 미녀가수를 대표하는
Joni James 가 불러 19세기 초
미국과 아일랜드에서 유행한 포크송이 되었고,
또한 많은 연주가들이 연주한 명곡이 되었지요
