Groove Theory는 1991년 Mantronix의 래퍼로 활동한 바 있는
Bryce Wilson과 보컬 Amel Larrieux의 만남으로 이루어졌습니다.
Bryce Wilson은 래퍼로서의 경험을 바탕으로
리드미컬한 감각을 R&B로 연출할 수 있는 프로듀서였고
Amel Larrieux는 호소력있는 보컬과 독특한 창법의 싱어였지요
그들은 그룹명을 타이틀로 내세운 데뷔앨범 Groove Theory를
1994년 발매하였는데 Bryce Wilson이 모든 수록곡들의 프로듀싱을 맡고,
Amel Larrieux가 혼자서 노래를 하는 형식으로 이루어진 이 앨범에 수록된
첫 싱글곡 'Tell Me'는 장기간 빌보드 싱글 핫 100 차트에서 3위를 기록한
Groove Theory의 대표곡이라고 할 수 있습니다
또한 이들의 앨범 Groove Theory 는
90년대 Urban Groove의 흐름에 역류하면서
처음으로 'Neo'라는 단어를 사용하게 하기도 했습니다
2000년에 솔로로 독립한 Amel Larrieux는
현재까지 두 장의 앨범을 발매하였는데
호소력 짙은 보컬과 철학적인 내용의 주제로
일부 골수팬들을 형성시킬 정도의 위력을 갖추고 있지요
