The Father and His Two Daughters
아버지와 두 딸
A MAN had two daughters,
the one married to a gardener, and the other to a tile-maker.
After a time he went to the daughter
who had married the gardener,
and inquired how she was and how all things went with her.
She said,
"All things are prospering with me, and I have only one wish,
that there may be a heavy fall of rain,
in order that the plants may be well watered."
Not long after,
he went to the daughter who had married the tilemaker,
and likewise inquired of her how she fared; she replied,
"I want for nothing, and have only one wish,
that the dry weather may continue,
and the sun shine hot and bright,
so that the bricks might be dried."
He said to her,
"If your sister wishes for rain, and you for dry weather,
with which of the two am I to join my wishes?'
어느 사람에게 두 딸이 있었다.
하나는 정원사와 결혼했으며, 다른 하나는 기와공과 결혼했다.
얼마 뒤에 그는 정원사와 결혼한 딸에게 가서,
그녀가 어떻게 지냈는지, 모든 일이 어떻게 돌아가는지 물었다.
그녀가 말했다,
"저에겐 모든 것이 번창하고 있어요,
그런데 오직 한가지 소원이 있어요,
비가 많이 내려서 식물들에게 물을 충분히 주었으면 해요."
얼마 지나지 않아서, 그는 기와공과 결혼한 딸에게 가서,
비슷하게 그녀에게 어떻게 꾸려가고 있는지 물었다;
그녀가 대답했다,
"저는 아무것도 바라지 않아요, 다만 오직 한가지 소원이 있어요,
건조한 날씨가 계속되고, 해가 뜨겁고 맑아서,
벽돌들이 마를 수 있었으면 해요."
아버지가 그녀에게 말했다,
"만일 너의 언니가 비를 원하고, 너는 마른 날을 원한다면,
둘 중의 어디에 나의 소원을 빌어야 하겠느냐?"
